“Whose City? Colonial Implications and Socio-Spatial Transformation of Triplicane and Mylapore in Chennai” is a contribution to The Chennai Metroplitan History Project and challenges the lexicon of public spaces and its relationship to modern urban planning during the colonial period in the Madras Presidency.
Taking two historically prominent neighbourhoods of Thiruvallikeni and Mylapore with a religious and caste-based social organisation, the study plans to understand the evolving uses of public spaces, their relationship to colonial urban planning and resultant negotiations between traditional and modern spatial practices (on-going project)
